Ravenhill Avenue : Flood Alleviation Project

About This Project

The Ravenhill Avenue Flood Alleviation Project in Belfast, delivered by NI Water as part of the £7 million ‘Living With Water Programme’, aimed to reduce the risk of property flooding in a densely populated urban area with outdated sewer infrastructure. A new 1800mm combined sewer and a 900mm storm sewer were installed to improve capacity and remove stormwater from the combined network. To minimise disruption, especially under the busy Ravenhill Road, a section of the sewer was installed using trenchless tunnelling methods by Active Tunnelling, employing open face shield pipe jacking. The project involved extensive enabling works, stakeholder engagement, and community outreach initiatives, including school programs and public consultations. With construction led by GEDA Construction and design by AECOM and BSP Consulting, the scheme is set to significantly improve flood resilience while supporting sustainable urban drainage in South Belfast.
